Care, Machines, & Nihilism
Human language is inseparable from our embodied engagement in the world, amidst other people, in pursuit of what matters.

This week, I'm continuing our immersion in the conversation about AI. Since several readers have mentioned that weekly text posts can be difficult to keep up with, I’m going to mix it up. This week, I’m sharing a video (and audio) of an interview I did about AI and philosophy.
Last year, I had the pleasure of being interviewed about AI and philosophy by my friends Andre Brǒz and Alton Sun. They included me in a series of conversations they conducted under the name The AI Safety Salon. They generously gave me the opportunity to explore and expand on some of the arguments I made in the paper I co-authored with Peter Denning, Can Machines Be in Language? (shared in these pages last week).
The range of topics we discussed gave rise to the episode’s title, Care, Machines, and Nihilism. In a future post, I will share some writing that further elaborates on these themes. But for this week, we’re keeping with textual minimalism!
